Las Vegas Son Cody Miller Mines Bronze in Rio De Janeiro!

World Class Breaststroke Swimmer and Nice Guy Cody Miller
Last night, Cody Miller realized a life-long dream, he is now an Olympic Medalist! Swimming the 100-Meter Breastroke in Rio De Janeiro as a member of Team USA, Cody dug deep and pulled out a Bronze at the games of the 2016 Summer Olympiad. No small feat considering his competition included Britain's Adam Peaty who was favored to win, and his own teammate Kevin Cordes who also was favored to metal--leaving Cody as a bit of an underdog going into the Finals. In fact, Peaty would take the Gold setting a new World Record in the process (57.13). Although, it would be Miller (58.87) who solely represented Team USA on the podium.

Prior to heading to Rio, Cody's mother, Debbie Miller, summed up his talent best: "I think you are born a breaststroker." However, that's not to say that Cody's road to Rio was an easy one. He also was born with Pectus Excavatum a condition that causes the ribs and sternum to grow abnormally resulting in a diminished lung capacity and consequences for the heart. His doctors suggested that swimming might help counteract the progression of the disorder. Regardless, his mom wanted Cody to learn to swim as she saw it as a life skill--one she did not possess growing up.

Working in his favor on all fronts, Cody was always comfortable in the water. He started competitive swimming at the age of eight. Shortly thereafter, Debbie Miller moved Cody and his little sister Catie (also an accomplished swimmer) to Las Vegas. It was here that with hard work he excelled as a member of the Sandpipers of Nevada until he graduated high school. He would go on to swim for Indiana University becoming an 8-Time All-American, hold eight Big Ten titles, and set several records in the Big Ten Conference. Today, Cody is a member of the US National Team and holds the American record for the fastest times in both 100M and 200M Breaststroke.

To say that Cody is the very model of a Champion who has overcome great odds is an understatement. He is a nice guy too. And, I, for one, love to see the underdog finish on top!

Congratulations to Team Miller!

Archie - An Unlikely "American Hero"

Upon meeting Archie for the first time, I had no doubt he was the real deal. His gaze did not miss a thing as he surveyed the room, yet he always had at least one ear finely tuned to his partner in crime, Officer Sean Malia.

This partnership, however, almost never was as Archie, formerly British Military, was diagnosed in late 2010 (shortly after being brought to the United States) with heartworm disease. Fortunately for all of us, with proper treatment and conditioning, he made a full recovery. In 2011 at 3-years of age, Archie, a Belgian Malinois (Mal-in-waa) began the intensive training of an American police dog. And, as they say, the rest is history.

From the moment they were paired together, Archie and Officer Malia have excelled at every aspect of their work on the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Often working with SWAT, this dynamic duo leaves no stone unturned--finding criminals (my words not Officer Malia's) when more traditional methods fail.

Pictured L to R: SSKC Chair Sandy Brannum, Archie,
Officer Sean Malia and SSKC Member Judy Shoup.
While not at liberty to share particulars about their successes on the streets of LV, when the pair did have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills last year at the K-9 Trials in Riverside, the performance spoke volumes. Archie and Officer Malia took 5th Place in "Evidence Search" and placed 3rd overall out of 63 top police dog teams.

Officer Malia and Archie are just one team out of 20-some serving the greater Las Vegas area. When it came to the attention of the Silver State Kennel Club's Canine Giving Committee that these civil servants did not have safety shields, its members stepped up and donated $4,000 to Friends of the Las Vegas Police K9s to purchase four state-of-the-art shields.

Today, more than ever, heros like Archie need our support. So, this 4th of July, I thought it only fitting to focus on these highly trained professionals and unsung American Heros: our K-9 Cops and their human counterparts, and otherwise pay tribute to them for all they do to protect and serve. You may too by giving them a LIKE on Facebook.

Happy 4th of July to ALL!

- Tammy

P.S. - I thought Archie should get a red cape to go with his new shield, but Officer Malia assured me that he flies just fine without one.

Selling Sexy

How's that saying go? The only constant is change? This certainly has been true of my photography business since I began in 2003--back in the darkroom days.

Some of you will even recall a time when my specialty was boudoir photography. I went so far as to even create a separate brand for the genre (see LOVE stamp logo above). At the time, the letyoursexyout.com website was the perfect showcase for the sexy side of TRR Photography and allowed me to keep this imagery separate from my more G-rated work. It also kept my male executive clients from getting into trouble at work when attempting to view their professional headshot galleries. lol

While Let Your Sexy Out (LYSO) once served a beneficial function within my photography business, that time has passed. In fact, just earlier today, I permanently removed what had remained of Let Your Sexy Out in the form of the WordPress blog (by the same name) from the world wide web.

Actual Client in Promo Image for Let Your Sexy Out - The Sexy Side of TRR Photography
Thus, I am now offering letyoursexyout.com for sale--and not necessarily to a photographer. LYSO could also be put to good use by a boutique lingerie shop owner, adult novelty retailer, or the like. So, while my business model has changed, I hope to see this domain name take on a new life apart from TRR Photography. After all, change can be sexy too.

- Tammy

For more information on how to acquire Let Your Sexy Out, the domain, please feel free to contact me. Terms are negotiable.

Meet A Real-Life "Rosie The Riveter"

Before she walked into my studio, I knew Carmella Wood was a special lady. While affectionately known as Aunt Millie to many, she is actually best know as a real-life Rosie The Riveter. Rosies, as they are collectively called, are women who worked factory jobs during World War II and bolstered the war effort, and subsequently the role of women in American society.

Even before she ever was a Rosie, Carmella already had a strong sense of self. As the eldest of five, she grew up helping others and believed in her abilities. When WWII broke out, Carmella knew she wanted to do her part and serve her country. As a women, she could not enlist, so she did the next best thing. She went to work on the home front. Armed with a power riveting gun, Carmella worked over the next two years on three configurations of the Corsair bombers in East Hartford, Conn. not unlike the Rosie character first mentioned in a 1942 tune:

"She's making history, working for victory..."

Today, at the age of 93, Carmella is still going strong! And in more ways than one, she is the very picture of a model Rosie.

Carmella Wood proudly wears her Rosie The Riveter attire everywhere she goes,
creating smiles and new friends along the way.
Inspired, her nephew approached me about photographing Carmella and otherwise recreating the Rosie character from the now iconic poster. Always up for a challenge myself, I agreed to the session. And, once I looked Carmella in the eye and shook her hand, I knew we could do it!

While the true story of Rosie isn't about any one woman, Carmella Wood will forever be Rosie The Riveter to me. And, she can be your favorite Rosie too. Like her Facebook page and like an American Hero!

Super Bloom 2016 - A super experience

Desert Gold makes up the majority of the Super Bloom display in Death Valley, CA.
I missed the last so-called Super Bloom in 2005, so I was bent upon getting to Death Valley to experience this one. Anticipated for months (as the result of rains received this past October), I am here to tell you that the 2016 Super Bloom is living up to its name.

While there are several different species of wildflowers present (some harder to spot than others like Purple Mat which grows close to the ground), the most notable is Desert Gold (shown here) which blankets most of the valley. Rising out of the desert floor up to three-feet, it also is the easiest photograph. And I found the best spreads lie at the southern end of Badwater Road. However, if you venture that far south into the park, be advised that a road closure will require you to go back the way you came. So, plan for the extra time required to exit the park, or at least get back to Badwater Basin (282 ft below sea level). For in the desert, amenities are scarce--need I say more?

This also could be a good time to take in some of the other sites in Death Valley, including the Devil's Golf Course (the salty remains of Death Valley's last lake) and, one of my personal favorites, Artists Palette (an amalgamation of colorful minerals on display in the rock).

While more flowers presently are blooming everyday, I was reminded that as living things they are susceptible to heat and wind--both of which can cut the blooming season short, especially here. So, if you want to witness Death Valley in full living color as I did, don't delay. Pack your camera and go!

See The Difference

See The Difference a Professional Photographer Can Make for YOU! Actual Client: Amy Lubawy
"The Drape" is dead.

As the mother of a recent high school graduate, I know firsthand just how much has changed since I was a senior sitting on a posing stool in the one-size-fits-all for girls simply called, the drape. However, some things do not change. Hippie attire apparently is still IN--who knew? And while taking pictures is more popular than ever, selfies are not portraits.

"Selfies" may have become this generation's normal (fad), but let's face it, selfies are rarely flattering. The lens distortion alone turns most people into caricatures of themselves. Not exactly the look that teens, especially young ladies, want to show-off beyond Snapchat.

If anything, today's high school seniors are very image conscious (probably due to all those bad selfies). And, this is where the professional photographer comes into the picture. After all, when her iPhone acts up, she goes to the Genius Bar for results. When she decides to go ombre, she's not asking her BFF to give her a color and cut--she's going to see a pro!

My real challenge as a certified professional photographer is educating my senior clients to See The Difference in photography too!

Because while some things inevitably change about being a senior in high school, quality never goes out of style. Go pro and show the world who you really are!

The Queen of Seventynineville Merits!

At this time last year, I was in Atlanta observing International Print Competition (IPC) with the hope of gleaning the insight needed to take my photography to the next level, specifically exhibition merit level! As the Queen of Seventynineville for several years running, I was ready to quit.

In print competition, 80 is a magic number. Ideally, the goal is to go even higher, but a score of 80-84 is considered to be "National Merit Level" and will earn you one merit toward a Masters Degree as conferred by the Professional Photographers of America. Images are judged against the 12 Elements of a Merit Image aka the Gold Standard. These include Impact, Technical Excellence and Creativity to name the top three. Story Telling, while listed at number 12, may well be one of the most important as evidenced by judges' comments, especially when an image is challenged. In such a case, a good story can be the saving grace of an image. I, personally, observed judges collectively over-look technical flaws (especially on a composite image) when it conveyed a good story.

Armed with the experience of observing the process firsthand, past failures and receiving feedback from more than one mentor, I entered print competition this year with the goal of finally getting that first merit. And as you can see here, I succeeded in my quest. In fact, I received not one but THREE merits this week in International Print Competition! All three portraits* will be on display at Imaging USA in Atlanta come January as part of the General Collection--that's what I call a happy ending!

In the meantime, I've got a tiara for sale.

- Cheers! Tammy

* IPC limits a "case" to four image submissions.

With my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the following talented women for their support of my quest: Master Photographer Sue Altenburg (NV), Photographer Kate Caudillo (TX), and Photographer Nancy Green (MA).

I Just Can't Say NO to Noah's Animal House

Pictured L to R: Judy Shoup, Sharon Kingston, Noah's Founder Staci Columbo Alonso,
Shelter Manager Gennifer Davenport and Sandy Brannum
Those of you who know me, know that as a general rule I do not shoot events. However, I learned a long time ago never to say NEVER. And, when the Chair of the Silver State Kennel Club's Canine Giving Fund Committee, Sandy Brannum, asked me to photograph the club's presentation of a cash donation to Noah's Animal House gratis, I knew I could not refuse.

Noah's Animal House is an adjunct of the Shade Tree Shelter for women. Together, the two entities provide a safety net for families and their pets in crisis taking that first step toward a better life. I think it safe to say that when most of us hear the words "domestic abuse," we rarely think about the pets in the household as victims too. The fact is that 78% of battered women reported animal abuse in the home by their abuser. Worse still, often times, women will remain in an abusive relationship out of fear of what might happen to their beloved pets as payback.

78% of battered women reported animal abuse in the home by their abuser.

This is where Noah's Animal House comes in. Founded by Staci Columbo Alonso, Noah's Animal House (named after her son), allows women and their children to take that first step without the guilt of leaving the family pet(s) behind. And just as importantly, these same pets play a huge role along the road to independence and happiness--even if it is just to lick the tears away as these families rebuild their lives.

In an address to members of the Silver State Kennel Club, Alonso stated that Shade Tree clients with pets at Noah's have a 2% recidivism rate, versus over 10% for those without pets. I attribute this in part to the unconditional love a pet brings into one's life. Although, there's no doubt that the bond between the women/children and their pets is the heart and soul of Noah's. And, the belief that no one should have to choose between her own safety and that of the family pet is what gives Noah's its purpose.

If you would like to join the Silver State Kennel Club and support Noah's wonderful works on behalf of pets and the women and children who love them, please do so. While monetary gifts are always welcome, even little things like dog bowls are needed and appreciated. For a complete list, see www.noahsanimalhouse.org/wishlist/.

Needless to say, I just cannot say no to Noah's.

Laughter IS the Best Medicine - Thank You Robin Williams

A good read for your next mental health day
With the news of Robin William's death, the internet is a buzz with commentary on mental health, specifically depression in society.

In her new book Reinventing Normal-How Choice and Change Shape Our Lives, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and Best-Selling Author Darlene Cross includes a chapter on diagnosing depression (by the same name) where she notes "many people battling depression are winning the fight today, but most do not do it alone." Unfortunately, there often is a stigma associated with mental health issues of any kind, and most of us will avoid the subject altogether until it hits us in the face which is what happened when Robin Williams took his own life.

When asked to comment on this issue, Ms. Cross said, "Rarely in all the years of my practice have I seen anything impact people as profoundly as the death of Robin Williams. While the public voiced an inability to comprehend the level of despair William’s must have been experiencing, some of these individuals understood it too well and instead questioned how others could not."

About now, you are likely asking yourself what in the world does this have to do with photography? My response to that is: plenty! As fellow photographer and blogger Kate Caudillo stated in a recent post titled Mindset, "Your belief system, and your mindset effect how you do everything. They are what infuse your actions with passion and purpose, and that is what leads to effectiveness. Every day you need to be working on YOU." And that means your mental well-being--no matter who you are or what you do.

So, I recently purchased and read Reinventing Normal--and not just because I created the portrait of the author on the back cover. And, I must say, the read was more akin to having a conversation over coffee with a friend (skipping from topic to topic) than a therapist. Although, as Ms. Cross points out in the book, "best friends are not therapists." Still, I couldn't help but be tickled by the humor and wit permeating the pages as derived from her own personality and experience as a mental health professional. Chapters including, Santa's Naughty List and Everything I Ever Needed to Know I Learned on My Yoga Mat had me cracking up until tears ran from my eyes.

And as Robin Williams always knew, laughter is the best medicine of all. Thank you for the wake-up call. RIP.

Celebrating 10 Years in Business

One of Only 200 PPA Members in Nevada
This Thanksgiving, I (we) have much to be thankful for as this year marks TRR Photography's 10th Year in business.  My associates and I seriously wouldn't be here without you, so we wanted to say, Thank You, to our clients, partners, and vendors (past and present) for shaping the studio and the resulting imagery into what it is today.

Some of our current clients actually started with me as "models" for photography class assignments before I even turned pro.  For fear of overlooking anyone, I will not attempt to post names here.  Suffice to say, I take great pride in being the best I can be and just wanted to acknowledge those of you who have been a part of the journey to date.

Here's looking forward to the next 10!

Best wishes, Tammy & Associates

30 Years on the Air and In Our Lives

Kurt Mische, President & CEO KNPB, Reno
Tonight the staff and friends of the PBS affiliate station, KNPB TV, are celebrating!  In addition to honoring Gail and John Sande III at the annual "Aged to Perfection" gala, this years' event also kicks off the 30th Anniversary of the Reno station on the air and in our lives.

President and CEO Kurt Mische (pictured) tells me that he will be joined by National PBS President and CEO, Paula Kerger, at the Silver Legacy to mark this milestone of bringing free, high-quality and educational programming to all in the greater Northern Nevada area.

I, however, also know that tonight is personal triumph of sorts for my friends, Kurt and his wife Judy, who have both made professional and personal sacrifices to get to this high point--dedicating years of service to the advancement of public broadcasting.  And, I just wanted to take this opportunity before the gala to say, Thank You, for enriching our lives on a daily basis.

For more information, on the gala or the station please visit www.knpb.org.

Happy 30th Anniversary to ALL,

So What is a Beach Day?

Black Pot Beach in Hanalei - Surfboards at the Ready
While many of you know that I go to Kauai as often as I am able, namely to make sure my vacation rental is still standing, I also go for the beaches.  And, my favorites can be found in the expanse of Hanalei Bay.

So, for our last day on island this month, my husband and I headed down to Hanalei for what turned out to be a three-ring circus around the pier.  Taking place within a stone's throw of each other was the start/finish for a canoe race, a sand castle contest, and (as I would later learn) KORE's monthly beach day.

A friend of ours was actually racing which meant we needed to be at Black Pot Beach early that morning, or what I would call early for a day at the beach.  While waiting for the men's and women's six-person canoe teams to assemble for the customary prayer and kick-off, a rainbow of surfboards at the shoreline caught my photographer eye.  As I turned my lens to the geometric pattern, unbeknown to me, another had locked her eyes on my camera.  Spying a red-orange caution cone in my frame, I looked up from my camera and moved to temporarily relocate it.  Just as I reached for it, a very enthusiastic young woman made her presence known saying, "I can help you," as she quickly picked up the cone.  Her excitement was plain to see as I acknowledged the assist and proceeded to photograph the colorful boards in the sand.

KORE Volunteer and Participant
I may have clicked my shutter all of twice before my new friend said something to me again.  While I did not catch all of it, it was apparent that she wanted me to take her picture.  And before I could actually say, yes, she darted off?  Within minutes, however, she was back with a man in tow (a KORE volunteer).  With his help, my friend was able to raise a board and happily pose for my camera.  Her delight in that moment was simply infectious (see inset).

Not to take away from the efforts of the canoe racers or sand castle builders on this misty morning, but this chance encounter was the highlight of my beach day and introduced me to the wonderful non-profit organization that is the Kauai Ocean Recreation Experience--all thanks to my new friend and the magic that is photography.

- Mahalo, Tammy

About KORE

TRR Photography Partners with Photobiz to Launch a New and Improved Studio Website

For those of you paying attention, my March blog post did go by the wayside, but for good reason.  I was busy working on a new website.  Having outgrown the old one, I was tickled to meet the Photobiz team at a recent convention where I partnered with them on the spot!

Powered by a passionate and patient support team, I am happy to announce that the studio's new and improved Photobiz website: www.trrphotography.com is now up and running!  And for the first time, the website can be found and opened on any device you may use to surf the web.  No longer will the site appear as a blank page begging the question: Why?

I, personally, am very excited about the user-friendly operation of the new site and its clean look which allows my photography to take center stage.  What's more, as the administrator of the site, I have the ability to make changes as desired to keep the content fresh--no more waiting for days to change an image featured in the homepage slide show.

Having cut my teeth on this site, I expect to also have the new website for Let Your Sexy Out live in the next week or two.  And, not to be left out of the makeover project, you may have noticed that this blog has a new look as well.  Now, I'm just left with my studio spring cleaning.  I wonder if the Photobiz team can offer me any solutions on this aspect of my business too.  : )

Until next month, Tammy

Bellies and Babies on Display

Once just pictures stuffed into a baby album after a maternity or newborn session, today's woman is turning a new page by creating wall displays with these images that go beyond nursery themes.

The sophisticated displays are produced on metal, featuring a high gloss or satin finish, and mounted to allow each piece to stand-out from the wall.  Ramona's collection of images shown here from two sessions, featuring three generations, was rendered this way with rounded corners, giving it a sculptural quality that is beautiful to behold.

While first year albums are still popular (at least for first born children), I really love the wall collection concept.  The configuration can be easily changed to keep it fresh, and new pieces may be added as the child grows or siblings come into the picture.  Additionally, metal prints are more durable than traditional photographic prints and may be ordered in wide range of sizes up to 43 x 96 inches!

For more info on metal prints and to see actual samples, please visit:
http://www.bayphoto.com/metalprints/single/index.htm

Family portrait sessions, pet sessions and more make for great metal art arrangements too.  Further, all make wonderful conversation pieces.  Metal wall collections are something to enjoy everyday--not just on those occasions when you might think to pull out the ol' album.

Who's Who in American Dogdom - Making the A-List

In the first-ever issue of ShowSight Magazine, Doll-McGinnis Enterprises published its lists of Who's Who in American Dogdom for 2013.  One list consists of professional handlers and the other features professional photographers and graphic artists--all of whom were deemed as providers of the best in dog show quality services across America.

Needless to say, learning that my name would appear on the A-List of top canine photographers was a proud moment for me.

I actually have been photographing dogs all my life.  And, I have been photographing show dogs from the time I was in high school, starting with my first show prospect--an Irish Setter named Erin.  While he never "finished," this experience proved to be the starting point of my love for the sport of purebred dogs.

As a professional photographer, I find it takes more than photographic skill to create great images of dogs, especially purebred dogs.  While one need not be a graduate of the American Canine Education Foundation's Judges Institute as I am, it is important to have an understanding of basic canine conformation and behavior.  Additionally, a working knowledge of breed type and expression is a real plus!  After all, it's these nuances that truly make each portrait special to me and my clients.

My thanks and appreciation goes out to all of my clients who have favored me with the pleasure of photographing their dogs, especially Jean Gauchat-Hargis of Summerwind Canines.  I'd also like to thank A.J. Arapovic of ShowSight for nominating me as a top photographer and graphic artist.  For this and more, I am honored--thank you!

Eye Candy for Photographers - The Westcott Shootout

David as "Magic Mike" at the Westcott Shootout - By TRR Photography

Nothing signals the end of summer and beginning of Fall like Photoshop World and Expo here in Las Vegas.  A must attend event for image makers of all skill levels and genres, it's simply the best training on the planet (you thought I was going to say, world, didn't you?).

Always popular is the Shootout sponsored by Westcott Lighting Solutions on the Expo floor.  And this time, Westcott partnered with Canon to bring attendees live educational demos showcasing lighting techniques that may be used in our own studios.  Although, hands-down, the real attraction remains the various vignettes created for the Shootout competition.  Everything from backdrops to models to costumes to hair and makeup, and, of course, lighting are skillfully executed in the booths.  I especially enjoyed seeing and learning from the stylings of Shelley Giard.  Simply put, it's eye candy for photographers!

Kelly in Yellow at the Westcott Shootout - By Let Your Sexy Out - The Sexy Side of TRR Photography

While I usually only observe, this year I decided to participate in the Shootout as shown here.  After all, I just couldn't resist.  I like candy!

Thank you Westcott Lighting Solutions!
